2 Line Cordless Phones - 5.8GHz Versus DECT 6.0 Phones

!±8± 2 Line Cordless Phones - 5.8GHz Versus DECT 6.0 Phones

The hunt for the best 2 line cordless phones has become more difficult. Until early 2009 the only options worth considering were 5.8 GHz two line cordless phones from Panasonic or Uniden. For fans of Panasonic cordless phones it couldn't have been easier. The only option on offer was the iconic Panasonic KX-TG6702B. Uniden on the other hand presented numerous options including the TRU8866, TRU9466 and TRU9496. The main differences between them boiled down to whether or not they included answering machines, dual keypads or corded cordless configurations.

DECT 6.0 Two Line Cordless Phone

DECT 6.0 technology is now unstoppable. Both consumers and manufacturers are sold on DECT cordless home phones. They're cheaper to produce and present fewer cordless phone problems.

The challenge for Panasonic and Uniden was one of timing. When to release their DECT 6.0 cordless phones. On the one hand they didn't want to cannibalize sales of their 5.8 GHz phones. On the other hand there was an advantage to be had in being the first vendor to announce a DECT 2 line phone.

In the end it was Panasonic that made the first move in releasing a DECT 6.0 cordless phone with 2 lines. The Panasonic KX-TG9392T was released in early 2009. Once Panasonic moved the rest followed. DECT two line cordless phones were released by: Philips, GE, RCA, Verizon / Siemens and finally the Uniden 4086 appeared.

A problem for Panasonic and Uniden was that in making the move from 5.8 GHz to DECT 6.0 technology they ran the risk of losing their proprietary edge. Both Uniden and Panasonic 5.8 GHz phones are robust and loaded with features. They are head and shoulders better than the products produced by their nearest competitors. But DECT 6.0 digital technology is a non-proprietary open standard. It levels the playing field and commoditizes the options. To differentiate their products the manufacturers must depend more on branding and exploit opportunities for adding bells and whistles where they can.

The Panasonic KX-TG9381T is a Bluetooth enabled DECT 6.0 cordless phone with 2 lines. It has got the usual features of a Bluetooth cordless phone plus the ability to download phone books from cell phones via a Bluetooth connection. The KX-TG9381T is an example of how Panasonic is differentiating it's DECT multi line cordless phones by adding bells and whistles.
